Why Seydisfjordur should be on your Iceland itinerary

Between the big beautiful snow-covered mountains and the Icelandic fjords, this tiny town 700 people is full of warmth. And to get there you go past many beautiful waterfalls or Waterfall Lane, as it’s called. It’s also a gateway to Iceland if you're arriving by boat from Denmark.

The rainbow road

Known for its colorful houses and beautiful nature Seydisfjordur really is something else. “Just a cute little town” is not really the way to describe it, more like “The cute little town with gorgeous nature, waterfalls, mountains and fjords” Let’s explore what makes Seydisfjordur a must-visit destination in Eastern Iceland.

Walking in town, you will discover some beautiful foot paths next to the water lagoon.

What to See in Seydisfjordur

1. The drive to Seydisfjordur: The road to Seydisfjordur from the Ring road and the city of Egilsstadir is incredibly beautiful. The roads are surrounded by dozens of waterfalls, snow covered mountains and beautiful nature.

2. Blue Church (Bláa Kirkjan): This iconic pastel blue church is a must-see. It’s not always open, but its exterior makes for fantastic photos, especially with the rainbow path leading up to it. We also realized that the church is actually metal plated!

3. Seydisfjordur Rainbow Path: The multicolored tile path in the town center leading up to the church celebrates the LGBTQ community. It is just absoulutely gorgeous to take photos at or just look at!

The most photographed spot in Seydisfjordur is clearly the Rainbow street with the cute Blue Church in the background.

4. Colorful houses: All around the town there are picturesque houses in different colors, some of them in wood but most of them just like the church are metal plated in all kinds of colors! It’s supposed to help protect the houses from things flying at it in the strong winds.

5. See the harbour: Big cruise ships coming in from all over the world, including the Smyril Line commuting from Faroe Islands and Denmark. The high mountains around the town create a safe harbour in the otherwise quite windy and harsh climate of North-Eastern Iceland.

How to Get There

The easiest way to reach Seydisfjordur is by car. From the Ring Road, turn off at Route 93 in Egilsstadir and enjoy the 30-minute drive through the beautiful landscape. During this ride there are many waterfalls including the Gufu & Fardagafoss waterfalls and many, many more.

You can also come by ship from Denmark or visit on a cruise ship during the summer months.

You don’t need to walk far to see a waterfall, this we shot in the middle of the city from close to the harbour!

 History of Seydisfjordur

Seydisfjordur has roots dating back to Iceland's early settlement days, but it really started to grow in the 19th century when Norwegian fishermen set up shop here. Thanks to a boom in herring fishing, it quickly became the most prosperous town in Eastern Iceland. Many of the picturesque wooden buildings you see today were brought over from Norway during these golden years.

Later, Seydisfjordur served as a base for American and British armies during World War II. After the war, the town faced an economic downturn but has since bounced back with fishing, tourism, and handicrafts.

There are many colourful houses in the small Town, some of them in Norwegian style, and some of them actually broth all the way from Norway by fishermen in the history!
