Breathtaking Views: The Glymur Waterfall Hiking Adventure

Breathtaking Views: The Glymur Waterfall Hiking Adventure

Introduction

The Glymur hike is a scenic adventure that takes you past jaw-dropping cliff edges, through lush landscapes and along a dramatic canyon. All of us really enjoyed the hike, as it included  both challenge and rewarding views of both canyon and waterfalls. Known for being one of Iceland's tallest waterfalls, Glymur is located in the Hvalfjörður fjord, just a short drive from Reykjavik. This hike is moderately difficult, making it accessible to most hikers with a decent fitness level.

Trail Overview

  • Hike Difficulty: Moderate (expect big rocks and some mud when wet)

  • Length: 7 km round trip

  • Time: 4-6 hours

  • Elevation Gain: 400 meters

The trail is well-marked and offers a choice between easier and more challenging paths. For the best views, take the more difficult black path.

Getting There

From Reykjavik, drive along Route 1 towards Hvalfjörður fjord and drive all all the way in the fjord, in total just over 1 hour drive. Look for signs for Glymur and follow the road to the parking area. The parking lot has a map showing the red (easier) and black (more difficult) paths and some practical tips (remember to read them!)

What to Expect

The hike to Glymur takes you through varied terrain, including rocky paths and along the edge of a deep canyon. Along the way, you'll encounter stunning viewpoints overlooking the waterfall and the surrounding landscapes. We stayed and had picnic at halfway up, amazing place!

Trail Sections

1.     Starting Point to the Cave: The hike begins from the parking lot, through a lush Icelandic vegetation onto a higher ground, where you can descend through an open Cave with many openings. After you descend through the cave you can cross the river.

2.     Ascending the Eastern Side. This side has several viewpoints where you can stop, catch your breath, and take photos. This section includes a smaller river crossing where you might need to take off your shoes and wade through shallow water.

There is always time for a picnic with a view!

3.     Reaching the Top: As you approach the top, the trail gets steeper and more challenging. The effort is rewarded with panoramic views of the waterfall and the canyon below.

4.     Crossing the River: At the top, you’ll find a sign marking the best spot to cross the river. The river at the top is wide and shallow. Be cautious and check the water depth before crossing to avoid being swept away by the cold currents. It’s a good idea to bring extra light shoes for this part to not hurth your feet when walking in the shallow water.

5.     Descending the Western Side: After crossing the river, you can descend on the western side of the canyon. This side is less challenging but still offers stunning views of the waterfall from a different angle. Choose the black path along the canyon for best views.

Gear and Preparation

  • Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots with good grip.

  • Clothing: Dress in layers to adapt to changing weather. A waterproof jacket is essential.

  • Essentials: Bring water, snacks, and a camera. Trekking poles can be helpful for stability.

  • Extra Shoes: Consider bringing light shoes for river crossings.

Best Time to Hike

The best time to hike Glymur is during the summer months (June to August) when the weather is milder and the days are longer. Early morning or late afternoon hikes are ideal to avoid crowds and enjoy the serene beauty of the waterfall.

Camping and Parking

Camping: There are no designated campgrounds at Glymur, but there are several camping options in the surrounding areas.

Parking: The parking lot at the trailhead is free, but it can fill up quickly during peak season, so arriving early is recommended.

Conclusion

The Glymur Waterfall hike is a must-do for anyone visiting Iceland. The combination of beautiful scenery, a moderate hiking challenge, and the thrill of crossing rivers makes this hike an unforgettable experience. Whether you're an experienced hiker or just looking for a memorable adventure, Glymur will not disappoint. So lace up your hiking boots, pack your gear, and get ready to explore!

When you forgot shoes, does plastic bags work?
(pro tip out of experience: No, they don’t, you just fall!)
